Falling For A Fell Pony

Harcala with a good friend of mine who joined
us on a trailride.  Harcala was interested in her
snack, until he had one. Smart boy.

Welcome Fell Pony Enthusiasts!
I saw my first Fell Pony at a horse fair in 2005. I was enamored immediately. I picked up every brochure I could find. I checked them out online. The more I learned, the more I wanted them in my life. I had been raised with Arabians and am still in love with them, but Fells combined many of the wonderful characteristics of Arabians with another favorite of mine... drafts. I loved the strength and heft and power... and hair of the draft horse.

I doubt any other breeder out there would see any correlation between Fell Ponies and Arabians, but please hear me out. Arabians are intelligent, long-lived, very personable, and incredibly versatile. Take those characteristics and put them into a small hairy draft... you have a Fell Pony.

After I met my first Fell Pony and decided I wanted to be involved with them, I started looking. There were a few very young foals available in this country, but no mature stock. So I began looking overseas.

I was in contact with several wonderful breeders who helped me find what I sought. Through a network of knowledgeable enthusiasts, I met Beverley Hodgson, of Inglegarth Stud in North Yorkshire, England.

She agreed to part with Harcala and a week before his second birthday, he arrived at my farm, fresh from quarantine.

Harcala has turned out to be the best equine partner I have ever had, and I have had dozens throughout my life.  I have an interest in many riding disciplines and Harcala does, too.

He and I spent the last three years on an Eventing facility. I rode Thoroughbreds,Warmbloods and others; and yet, my Fell Pony was just as enjoyable- even more so. Harcala and I can enjoy an easy trailride down a dirt road, or along a narrow rocky path. We can go swimming, jump fences, play Natural Horsemanship games, competitive trailrides, equine agility and any number of other activities.

I have two gorgeous Fell Pony mares and a young filly who have just as much interest in their environment as Harcala does. Their potential as equine partners leads me to believe that this is a Fell Pony standard.  I have come to believe that the Fell Pony is the best potential partner for most people who have an interest in many disciplines.
